With support from the Washtenaw County Office of Community
and Economic Development, this study was commissioned by the Ecology Center and
Washtenaw Food Policy Council to address these short comings and, evaluate the
state of affairs in the farm-to-institution sector of the local food system.
The goals and objectives of the study are as follows:
Conduct research on current progress, policies
and infrastructure related to local food procurement in Washtenaw County by
institutions in major sectors including K-12 schools, health care,
colleges/universities, government agencies and correctional facilities.
Identify, detail, and provide a nuanced
understanding of critical challenges preventing the expansion of local food
purchasing by Washtenaw County institutions; and
Identify key levers, opportunities and evidence-based
approaches for addressing the critical barriers and challenges in order to
increase local food procurement by Washtenaw County institutions.
